Tanabata is on 7/7. According to legend, Orihime (織姫) and Hikoboshi (彦星)can meet only on this day in the Milky Way (天の川). But if the weather is bad they can't meet.
Orihime and Hikoboshi are the stars named Vega and Altair.
On this day tanzaku (strips of paper 短冊) are hung from bamboo leaves. Wishes are written on those papers.
However there are also Tanabata festivals in August. For example, this year the famous Sendai Tanabata Festival (仙台七夕まつり) is August 6-8. This is because differences between the lunar calendar and the Gregorian calendar.
