Nice to meet you Migique Preferred name: Julian Student or employee: Employee, though planning to start studying in Japan next year Native Language: German, Spanish Learning Language(s): Japanese, Chinese How long have you been learning: almost 2 years, more or less consistently Reason for learning: I'm kind of a language fanatic and I wanted to learn something totally different, so I started with Japanese. I loved the whole language from the beginning, so I kept studying. While I traveled through pretty much whole Japan for 3 months I realised that I want to live there for at least a few years, so this obviously gave me motivation to keep studying and become fluent in Japanese. I'm also thinking about becoming a translator/interpreter, which is why I'm planning to study Japanese linguistics in Japan. Future goals: Become fluent (the reasons are already stated above) and to realise my plans of living in Japan.

Preferred name: Caracal Student or employee: Both: I am currently in college, and working part-time. Native Language: English Learning Language(s): Japanese, Spanish How long have you been learning: I took Spanish classes in high school, and have been studying on and off since then (so maybe 5 years). I have been studying Japanese for about 2 years. I have given it more focus in the last few months, though. Reason for learning: I love languages, I enjoy the challenge of learning the kanji, and anime and manga make fun practice materials. It is also useful to know more than one language. Future goals: I don't really know. My general goal is to just keep improving. I would like to visit Japan someday. I don't expect to ever reach a "native" level, but I want to be able to read and speak Japanese with confidence, eventually.

Nice to meet you all. I'm looking forward to learning together with everyone here! Preferred name: trunklayer Student or employee: employee Native Language: Russian Learning Language(s): Japanese How long have you been learning: My first attempt was in 2004, second - in 2010; both failed. Thus, this is my third attempt, and I really hope to be able to succeed this time. Reason for learning: Learning Japanese has been my dream since childhood. Future goals: My goal is to reach at least the same level at Japanese as I've reached at English. I'm not trying to say that my English is any good, but at least I'm able to speak quite freely, watch English movies and news, listen to English audiobooks, read English books, play English games and use English resources like this site to study Japanese. I hope to be able to do it all with Japanese someday too.

Preferred name: Keru
Student or employee: Both
Native Language: English
Learning Language(s): Japanese and Spanish
How long have you been learning: I began my Japanese studies around August of last year, so almost a year.
I took Spanish in high school for 2 years (this was about 10 years ago) and was very good at it, but I did not practice so much afterward so I sort of lost it. Now that I work at my current job, many of the employees are Hispanic and do not speak much English, if any at all. I decided to pick it up again now that I have plenty of people to practice with. I took a semester in college, and I shall begin another summer semester next month.
Reason for learning: At first I wanted to be able to watch anime without reading subs, but as I learned more about the language I also learned about Japanese culture, which fascinated me. I would love to travel to Japan someday and immerse into the culture.
For Spanish, my main reason is to be able to communicate effectively with my coworkers. It is also an excellent skill to possess in Texas, since about half of our population is Hispanic. It looks great on a resume and many jobs will offer higher pay if you're bilingual.
Future goals: I would love to visit Japan someday and have the ability to communicate with the locals. If I love it, I may consider moving there, at least for a while.
As for Spanish, my goal is to be able to converse with my coworkers and get better at speaking. I can understand much more than I can speak. Spanish is sort of a side project, Japanese is my main focus.

Preferred name: Tenshi Student or employee: Student Native Language: German Learning Language(s): Spanish, Japanese, and English I suppose How long have you been learning: I started learning Japanese like.. three days ago? We'll see if I can keep it up. I've been wanting to do it for years, though. Spanish: 7 years if you count school. But I never actively tried to really learn the language so my Spanish skills aren't nearly as good as they should be after all that time. English: 8 years, if you count school. Reason for learning: I actually like learning languages in general (even though it's sort of hard for me to stick with it for a long period of time), and Japanese sounds really beautiful. The writing system is fascinating. I'm really interested in learning a language that's completely different from my own. Future goals: I want to be able to read Japanese books and watch Japanese movies without subtitles at some point in the future (Normal ones, not those aimed at children). That could take a while, though.
